Oncological surgeons are often requested in their clinical practice to
identify and manage uncommon and complex situations. It is therefore of
the utmost importance that they are well aware of the most recent
technological evolutions, in order to achieve the best possible results
in term of oncological outcome, with a concern on quality of life and
economical issues. Furthermore, new techniques can give a fundamental
contribution in overcoming the limitations of standard approaches.
An essential aim of this book is to underline the great importance and
the need of an effective coordination of multi-disciplinary care among
surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation therapists, plastic surgeons
and ancillary services, in order to optimise patient outcome. |

Description |
|
This slim monograph presents a concise update "on new technologies in
the detection and treatment of neoplastic pathologies." One of a series
of such monographs produced biannually by the Italian Society of
Surgery, this book is best used as a comprehensive, expanded inventory
of techniques and applications. |
|
|
|
Purpose |
|
The purpose is to provide an update and to summarize the wide range of
techniques currently available for the diagnosis and treatment of
cancer, with an emphasis on new and emerging technology. This is a
worthy purpose and the book accomplishes it well. For its slender size,
the book is surprisingly meaty, but easy to read in a few sittings. It
does not replace comprehensive references, but it does serve to alert
readers to what is now available. |

|
|
Audience |
|
Written primarily for surgeons and other practitioners, the book will be
of value to the wide range of physicians and others involved in the care
of patients with cancer. It is less likely to be of use to trainees, who
will need either a more basic (for residents and students) or a more
comprehensive (for fellows) reference in particular areas.

Features |
|
Topics are organized by technology. Thus, the 14 chapters span such
issues as radioguided surgery and robots in oncological surgery. The
chapter on radioguided surgery seems a bit elementary, since most
surgeons are familiar with the sentinel node concept. There is a good
section on the use of radioguided surgery for specific malignancies,
such as neuroendocrine tumors. Concluding chapters on palliative care
and ethical issues are a welcome addition. The book is nicely
illustrated with color and black-and-white photos. |

Assessment
|
|
This book serves its intended purpose as an update. It was not intended
to replace comprehensive books, and those seeking detailed information
about any specific technique will need to consult other sources (such as
the references at the end of each chapter). |
